Tara is one of the main enlightened beings of Buddhism. She was born from the tears of Avalokiteshvara when he mourned the suffering of the world. A lotus grew from a fallen tear, and from it was born Tara, who became his wife. On one half of the mask is a calligraphic symbol of her name, on the other a mantra addressed to her. This text does not have a literal translation from Sankrit, however, it will be quite accurate to understand that this is a prayer for a long life.
